Surfin’ England Präsentationsphase

As part of the Surfin’ England Website produce a number of web pages covering your chosen topic. The following hints might prove useful:

Page elements and layout

  • remember: this is an online medium; most people are probably not willing to read very long texts online
  • it is also a medium offering multimedia-possibilities;  use those possibilities by including photos and/or graphics but don’t overdo it – many people are still on very slow lines and are not prepared to wait for ages until a page has loaded. Use small pictures/graphics and compression
  • the (instant) hyperlink is what makes this medium really different from others, so use links on your pages that link to your other pages (to improve navigation) as well as to other pages on the internet which deal with the same topic and offer additional related information
  • don’t forget: not everyone on the internet uses a Windows-PC with dozens of different fonts; there are still many whose PCs can only deal with very few fonts. To be on the safe side just use Times New Roman and Arial as your fonts
  • keep your layout simple and easy to read; not everyone likes navy-blue text on a black background (in fact, many find it impossible to read)
  • two short pages are usually better than one very long page unless you provide easy navigation on your “long” page

 Navigation

  • your pages will be part of a bigger website; to make navigation on this website easy, all your pages should provide a link to the starting page of your topic as well a link to the index-page of the website
  • use text marks (internal links on a page) to make navigation on “long” pages with a lot of text more comfortable
  • if you should decide to use frames make sure that your links are correct; sometimes frames “double” or “catch” the visitor against his/her will
  • if a link leads way from the Surfin’ England website it’s a good idea to open a new browser window with that link (_blank)

Naming conventions

For practical reasons – somebody will have to put everything together in the end – it is very important that you follow our naming conventions:

  • never use capital letters in your filenames (for a web server text.doc is different from Text.doc)
  • your filenames should make it clear what the file, photo etc. is about
  • always save your files in the appropriate directory/subdirectory on the school server to avoid confusion among and between the various groups and sub-groups

 Co-operation

This is a co-operative effort of 21 students and 1 teacher. Please make sure it works by really co-operating as members of a group. It is unavoidable that you split up in smaller groups of two or three from time to time. Don’t forget to come together again! You should have meetings of all group members at regular intervals. The purpose of those meetings: find out where you stand, avoid redundancy, see whether you need an experts’ help etc.
